Plaze of the Concorde

Plaza de la Concorde

There is where the most antique monument of Paris is. The obelisk Luxor is an Egyptian piece built 33 centuries ago that showshieroglyph that refer to Ramses II and III anecdotes. All around the square you will find the statues referring to the 8 big cities of France. The two founts are the replica of the ones in the square San Pablo, Roma.
The Place is a big urban space barely built. It is also built over a mud hole in the outsides of the city in the second half of the XVIII century with the objective of placing in the middle of it a royal statue.
There are almost no façade in the square, only in one of the sides. Founds inspired in the Romans are distinguished. The Cesar roman’s  ideas are a constante in Paris. There are 8 statues that represent a french city.

In the heart of the square there is an obelisk that was a gift given by an Egyptian governor to France in the XIX century. It was placed there as an emblematic and neutral element representing harmony; pretending to be the symbol of France as well.
The name de la Concordia (harmony) has its reasons. This was a tragic place. The biggest tragedy was the installation of a terrible repression method: the guillotine. Hundreds of Frenchmen died victims of the revolutionary justice. This is now seen as a collective guilt, when that repression took place they intended to create peace that is to say concorde (harmony).
From this place you can have a great perspective of the city like the union between the Louvre, The Arc de Carrusel, the Cham-Elysees and the Arc de L’Etoile.
