Montparnasse Cemetery

The Monsparnasse Cemetery or South Cemetery is located in the Montparnasse neighbourhood. It has a 19 hectare area and more than one thousand trees. It is known nowadays as one of the most important green areas of Paris. It was inaugurated the 25th of July of 1824.

Formerly, in the XVI century rubble was deposited there. In the XVII century a hill was made out of this rubble and the place turned out to be a nice area for Parisian students. Later the Dieu Hotel bought the land and created two big farms. Finally during the French Revolution the land was confiscated and unknown people were buried there.

In the XIX century the lands were property of the city. The construction of a cemetery to bury the south Parisians was planned. In the year 1847 it had to be enlarged doubling its area. A couple of years later it had to be reduced for traffic reasons. Nowadays there are 35 thousand tombs.

It is opened from Monday to Friday from 8:00am to18:00pm. On Saturdays from 8:30am to 18:00 and on Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00pm.
