Montmartre Cemetery

The Montmartre cemetery or Northern Cemetery is located west to the Butte, near the Clichy square. Opened sine 1825, January 1st, the cemetery is built over an old mine.
The cemetery has an area of 11 hectare and more than 700 trees. In the XVIII century the place was occupied by a gypsum quarry. During the French revolution the place was used to deposit the victim’s bodies. When the Innocent Cemetery had to close due to sanitary dangers and in consequence so the other cemeteries had to, the bodies of the Paris citizens were also deposited there. A one hectare land was bought in order to solve the situation and properly bury Parisians. Of course rapidly the extension was full again. In 1825 the cemetery was enlarged as it is today.
