Metro of Paris history

metro of paris

Line 1 (Porte de Vincennes – Porte Maillot) was opened the 19th of July of 1900 to celebrate there the Olympic Games of this year. It was later enlarged until the station La Defence in the neighbourhood with the same name by the ends of the 90s.
Lines from 1 to 10 were built by the city of Paris and they begun to work thanks to Compagnie du Chemin de Fer Métropolitain from Paris (CMP)
A second company called Société du Chemin de Fer Electrique Nord-Sud from Paris (also known as Nord-Sud) begun the construction of two new lines in 1910 called A and B (today are part of lines 12 and 13). Nord-Sud merged with CMP in 1930 and they completed lines 11 and 14. CMP was then possession of the state in 1948 and the name was changed to Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (known as RATP).

Line 14 is the newest among all, also known as meteor line (ligne météor). It is considered one of the most modern metro lines of the world. Trains from line 14 are automatic and controlled by a computer (there is no driver). At the station travellers are separated from the train rails by a crystal wall with doors that are only opened when the train arrives.

Architecture
The first metro stops were made of forged iron with a high visual impact. They have an Art Nouveau style and were designed by Hector Guimard. Later they have turned into the city’s logo. Nowadays there are 86 stops that remain original, one was donated to the Lisboa metro in the middle 80s and another one to the Mexican City Metro (located in the entry of the Fine Arts Stations).
The metropolitan has 16 lines in total. Two of them are minor lines known as 3bis and 7bis.
