Los Halles

los halles of paris

Les Halles was the traditional central market of Paris that are part of this beautiful city’s history. Thos wholesale market was created during the Second Empire. Due to traffic problems, it was moved in the 60’s to the outsides of the city. In the 70’s it was turned into a mall named Forum des Halles.
The market was saturated and between 1763 and 1767 the Wheat Halle was built to replace the Soissons council. You can still see the astronomical column of Ctalina de Medecis situated in the building (nowadays the Chamber of Commerce):

In 1866 the Leather Halles was inaugurated. It was built over premises of the former “One hundred child hospice” that had an area of 1 hectare. In 1906 the market burned and nothing was left of it.

There were also cloth, herbs and wine Halles.
This is one of the most antique zones of Paris very visited by tourists due to its history.
