Gustave Moreau biography

Gustave Moreau was born in Paris the 6th of April of 1826.
In the year 1838 he began to study at the College Rollin boarding school. Sooner, he quit due to axial reasons and he continued his studies at a private institute.
In 1844 he finished school and he began working as a pupil in the workshop of the painter François-Edouard Picot. In 1847 he presented himself at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and he successfully passed the entrance exam. He wanted to accomplish the Rome Award but he couldn’t do it and after two failures he decided to abandon the academy.
In 1852 he moved his workshop to the third floor of a house that his parents rented for him, that is nowadays the museum.

In 1855 he showed his piece Los atenienses en el laberinto del Minotauro in the Universal Exposition of Paris.
In 1859 he began a love relationship with Alexandrine Dureux. The next few years were not that good for the artist, mainly due to his mother death in 1884 and Alexandrine Dureux in 1890. When his bestfriend Elie Delaunay died in 1891, he succeeded him as a teacher at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He continued being a teacher till he died. He was a teacher of now many famous artists like Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Georges Rouault.
He died the 18th of April of 1898 when he was 72 years old. His rests are in the Monmartre cemetery.
