Canal Saint Martin
| |
Today, the canal is a popular destination for Parisians and tourists who watch the communication of the Villete with the Seine.
The canal was opened in 1825 after 20 years of construction. The Canal entrance is quite discreet, opening through two revolving tunnels. It is 4,55 km long more than 2 km underground. There are 9 locks to face the 25 m level difference. Traffic has diminished in this place in order to leave more space for tourists.
It is an exceptional place to enjoy your free time with nature. Cyclists take advantage of it due to the absence of traffic. If you prefer to walk you can do it over the iron footbridges. If you do not want to expose yourself to the sun you have many cafés available. Thanks to the Hôtel de Ville the Canal is in good conditions. After its opening many things changed and nowadays is different.
